Course Description:
This course includes a certified lactation consultant which plays a critical role during tongue tie release.
In this combination lecture and hands-on course, attendees will be introduced to the concept of laser frenectomies, an increasingly popular method by which dentists and physicians can treat tongue and lip ties in their patients.
5% or more of the babies born in the United States have such tight tongue ties and frenum pulls that they cannot successfully latch onto the mother’s nipple and breastfeed. For the baby, serious consequences include loss of weight and the label of “failure to thrive”. For the mother, this results in sore and cracked nipples, mastitis, painful engorgement and post-partum depression due to an inability to nurse her baby.
This has classically been treated by a physician taking a scalpel or a pair of scissors to the newborn’s mouth and cutting the attachment. The treatment of choice, however, is for a dentist to use laser technology to painlessly, bloodlessly remove the attachment, allowing the infant to immediately nurse.
This participation course will teach the medical and dental team how to accumulate all of the required data via history intake forms, perform a clinical examination to arrive at the correct diagnosis, evaluate when this procedure should be done, and then perform the procedure using laser technology. The course will also go over the practice management/marketing side of this procedure: how to network with lactation consultants, pediatricians, neonatologists, and the rest of the medical team in order to grow your practice of neonatal dentistry.
Objective:
In this course, you will learn best practices regarding tongue-tie assessment and treatment and participate in a hands-on workshop where you will learn how to remove tongue-ties through the use of soft-laser tissue on pig jaws. This course is recommended for general dentists, periodontists, oral surgeons, pediatric dentists, lactation consultants, pediatricians, speech therapists, nurses, chiropractors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and more.
Hands-On:
The HANDS-ON portion of the program will be performed on tissue samples and pig jaws and includes:
- Laser incising in micro pulsed mode with focused laser beam
- Deep high-power incisions vs shallow low-power incisions
- Laser coagulation and hemostasis with defocused laser beam
- Laser Incising under tissue tension
- Laser Tongue Tie Release simulation
- Laser Buccal Tie Release simulation
- Laser Vestibuloplasty simulation
- Laser Biopsy simulation
- Simulated laser operculectomy, fibroma excision, gingivectomy, etc
- Superficial laser ablation of epithelium
- Superficial laser heating of epithelium
- Simulated laser treatment of ulcerous lesions

Robert Convissar, DDS, FAGD, DABLS, MALD

About the Speaker
Joy Funston, RN, IBCLC
Joy Funston RN International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Joy is the founder / CEO of Joyful Start, a Lactation Support private practice in Charlottesville, Virginia. Her intro into lactation was when she herself was an inexperienced breastfeeding mom. Luckily the help she found was from two of the co-founders of the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) profession. She successfully gained her own IBCLC credential during the infancy of that profession, more than 30 years ago.
Joy’s RN career has been spent caring for fragile new families. She first practiced in a Level 3 Pediatric ICU, then in a large Newborn ICU, and now her emphasis is on newborns in her own busy practice. Her current professional focus is on supporting families challenged with Ankyloglossia, as she also offers educational opportunities to healthcare providers. As of 2017 she has collaborated worldwide with other Ankyloglossia experts, as a board member of the International Affiliation of Tongue Tie Professionals (IATP).
