"Dr. Koerner's Oral Surgery course is my favorite classroom experience at NJHPDI and I have attended many classes over the past 6+ years…The programs are well organized, they start and end as advertised, there are always ample opportunities for questions and discussion...Despite lots of courses and experience in the past, Dr. Koerner taught me there is still a lot that I can learn. I also enjoy Dr. Feiler's participation in the sessions. Dental education never ends, and that is exciting."

NOW EXTENDED - Increased from 15 Credits to 16 Credits!

The Hands-On portion will be performed on both pig jaws and life-like dentoform models, performing surgery procedures that are a prelude to doing them on patients. The principles and techniques from the discussion will be realistically implemented on the models.  Each doctor will have their own model, their own pig jaw, and their own set of surgical instruments throughout the entire course!
The following will be performed over two days during the Hands-On portion:

  • Surgical extractions
  • Socket preservation with bone graft material and barrier membrane
  • Partial bony maxillary and mandibular impactions performed with flap reflection
  • Bone removal to avoid sensitive anatomic structure
  • Preventing a dry socket
  • Multiple extractions followed by alveoplasty and continuous-lock suturing
  • Incision and Drainage
  • Suturing techniques
  • Other minor oral surgery procedures

12 Hands-On Surgical Procedures performed on pig jaws and life-like dentoform models:

  1. Surgical extraction of a fractured-lower first molar (Includes root retrieval using algorithm)
  2. A socket bone graft procedure. (Bone graft and double barrier membrane.)
  3. Multiple extractions (4) including "surgical" root removal
  4. Alveoplasty of the ridge followed by continuous-lock suturing.
  5. Surgical extraction of an upper first molar with a fractured root and sinus perforation using techniques that prevent a root from going into the maxillary sinus (embedded within the model).
  6. Use a Headstrom file with floss for additional control of a root tip near the sinus
  7. Use of grafting to treat sinus perforation
  8. Surgical extraction of an upper third molar vertical impaction.
  9. Surgical removal of a partial bony mesioangular, lower third molar impaction using a triangular flap and appropriate sectioning technique
  10. Perform an excisional biopsy
  11. Perform an "incision and drain"
  12. Perform a labial frenectomy

This course will enable you to:

  • Go back to the office with superior knowledge
  • Have a solid feel for soft tissue incisions, bone removal and placement of bone graft material
  • Know first-hand how various surgical materials are used and/or manipulated
  • Receive one-on-one instruction and feedback on a number of procedures
