Course Description: 

This course was developed to educate dental professionals regarding the most current evidence-based practices and principles needed to implement an infection control program in a dental health care setting. It also addresses OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogen Standards as a summary of Infection Prevention Practices in Dental Settings. This course has been approved by the NY State Education Department.

This course is a required and comprehensive update on infection control issues including:

  • Hand Hygiene
  • Latex Sensitivity
  • Updated Guidelines on Post Exposure Management
  • Engineered Sharps/Safety Devices
  • Immunization Series Recommended for DHCW

Course Objectives

  • Satisfaction of OSHA's annual training requirement for all employees present
  • Certification for those employees designated as the OSHA Staff person in their office
  • Understand updated and current CDC infection control guidelines
  • Satisfies the requirement for NY State Licensure Renewal
  • All dentists and dental hygienists in the state of New York must complete course work or training appropriate to their practice regarding infection control and barrier precautions, including engineering and work controls to prevent the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the hepatitis b virus (HBV) in the course of professional practice, EVERY FOUR YEARS according to Section 6505-b of the Education Law. You must attest to having completed this requirement to the State Education Department on your first licensure/registration application and at every subsequent registration.

About the Speaker

Rina Nowka, RDH, MA

Rina A. Nowka, RDH, MA is a Full-Time Clinical Instructor and the Student Professional Development coordinator in the Department of Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting at NYU College of Dentistry.  She teaches preclinical and clinical care in the dental Hygiene Program.  She currently serves as the Member Services Director of the NJHDA.  She is also a practicing dental hygienist for over 30 years.

She has published in the Journal of Dental Education and has lectured at numerous dental meetings.
